Frequently Asked Questions
What Makes Direct Primary Care Different?
Traditional insurance programs play a role in healthcare but often comes with significant drawbacks. Many necessary preventive tests and follow-ups, such as lab work for disease prevention or recommended imaging procedures for early detection, are not covered unless the disease has already taken hold, which minimizes the impact of treatment. This creates barriers to essential care, as insurers tend to favor reactive treatments over proactive measures. Price transparency is lacking, and insurance companies dictate what tests and medications are available, leading to inflated costs and a profit-driven model that doctors are cornered into practicing. Direct Primary Care takes us back to the art of medicine where doctor-patient relationships are the priority, allowing doctors and patients the time to see the big picture of your health, to create personalized health profiles and action plans tailored to your individual needs, free from restrictive insurance parameters.
What is covered with my monthly membership?
Access to medical care the way it used to be - patient centered, collaborative care that prevents disease and fosters longevity. An accessible relationship with your doctor - availability to see him within a day or two for acute needs, a direct text line for off hour needs, telehealth appointments, and no co-pays for visits - whether you need 1 visit every 6 months or a weekly visit due to close monitoring of care, we have the flexibility to provide available care. Additionally, we host monthly educational lectures, small group member visits, community walks along the Arkansas River, and a discount to personalized health coaching through our onsite health coach.
Are you accepting new Medicaid Patients?
We are not accepting any new medicaid patients - due to the parameters of medicaid primary, it is illegal for us to charge medicaid patients through our direct primary care model.
Can I still use my insurance?
Absolutely! We can still order radiology, labs and medications that are then covered by your insurance plan if you choose to maintain one. Keep in mind that when using your insurance, they (the insurance company) set the rules on whether a test or treatment is covered, and how much it costs. If a claim is rejected by insurance, they will charge you in full out of pocket. Insurance is best utilized for emergency care, specialists, surgery, etc. Insurance will not cover your membership or any in office visits - the reason being that when they do, they control the quality of care with financial incentives to continue ‘sick care’ rather than preventative care. We believe in providing quality care without being bound by the bounds insurance companies put doctors into. Here at our practice this looks like: longer appointments, access to care when you need it, transparent pricing, and plans to optimize your wellness that is consistent with your unique desires.
Can I use my HSA (Health Savings) account?
Yes. You can use HSA funds for medications, labs, and radiology. Unfortunately, at this time the IRS does not consider your DPC subscription fee as a “qualified medical expense”. There are many advocacy groups fighting to change this, so please reach out to your political representatives if you want to join this effort.
What if I want to leave the practice?
We believe that your healthcare is your choice and always should be. We strive to provide you with excellent care but if you move or decide that you no longer want to be a member, you can cancel your membership at any time after the first 3 months.
Do you offer a one time visit?
No - we believe the best care comes from an ongoing and unrestrictive relationship with your doctor. While one time visits can treat disease, ongoing care prevents disease and supports longevity. We never know when a sickness or the need for stitches may come up - We want our patients to have access to their Doctor when life happens to know how to make the most informed decision and get the care that they need.
In what ways is your pricing transparent?
During your appointments with Dr. Rahman, he will let you know pricing with his contracts for labs, medication and radiology prior to ordering them. In addition, if you have insurance, he will share your different options for what makes the most financial sense for you and your unique situation. In some cases, it is not always best to use your insurance. For example, if we recommend an MRI for your neck pain you have 2 options: - Use your insurance - typically it will take 6-8 weeks to schedule the MRI and costs on average $2,000, which you will not know until after the test has been done. - Pay cash without using insurance through our contract - Receive your MRI within a week or two, typically costs are $$, and you know before the referral is sent in so there are no surprises See our *pricing page* for the breakdown of our age bracket memberships.
